Creator and director Vince Gilligan has lost none of his eye for a shot – in one particularly arresting sequence, we see Jesse ransacking an apartment from a birds eye view, roving from room to room with a torch like a desperate Pac-Man. a very quiet crime movie with an unreluctant protagonist. Jesse is in a very, very dark place when the action begins – but other than that, it hits all the same notes. Without Bryan Cranston’s Walter White to bounce off, El Camino doesn’t have quite as many moments of levity as a typical Breaking Bad episode. Breaking Bad was a solid series from start to finish. El Camino is much closer in tone to a Breaking Bad episode, with that ratcheting of tension and sudden swings in power – lots of charged moments where people point guns at each other while their temples throb. Better Call Saul, the prequel spin-off series about the rise of crooked lawyer Saul Goodman (who doesn’t make an appearance here), felt very different in tone to Breaking Bad, with its deliberately slow pacing and a clearly defined end-point. ![]()
